Gather Stitch
Not to be mistaken with the hand stitch gather.
Gathering with sewing machine
1 Stitch two parallel lines. Use the edge of the foot as a spacing guide (do NOT go back on yourself as you do with a normal straight stitch).
2 Take the two top threads (shown in red) and gently pull.
3 The fabric will gather as you do this; you may have to help the fabric along.
4 Once the fabric is gathered, sew a running stitch between the two parallel lines.
5 Unpick the two original gathering stitches.
